Stir Fried BBQ Shrimp

Use a Custom Curry Spice Blend to Flavor Seafood

May 9, 2008 Lynn Smythe

Create a custom seasoning blend which incorporates a variety of spices. The spice blend is then used to make a creamy, sweet and spicy BBQ shrimp dish.

Stir Fried BBQ Shrimp

This recipe can easily be doubled for serving at parties. It can be kept warm in a chaffing dish or in a slow cooker set to low. The finished dish can be served on top of white or brown rice, pasta, baked potatoes or chow mein noodles. Serve this dish along with steamed vegetable or pork dumplings and some stir fried broccoli with snow peas, for a complete, Chinese-style meal. This recipe makes 6-8 servings.

Ingredients for the BBQ Shrimp

  • 2 pounds large shrimp - peeled and de-veined
  • 2 egg whites
  • 1 tablespoon cornstarch
  • 1 ½ teaspoons salt
  • 1 cup vegetable oil
  • 1 ½ cups finely chopped onion
  • ½ teaspoon granulated sugar
  • 1 recipe curry powder blend - see recipe below
  • ½ cup cream or milk
  • 1/2 cup honey bbq sauce
  • Red bell pepper - seeded and cut into thin strips

Directions for the BBQ Shrimp

  1. In a small bowl whisk together the egg whites, cornstarch and salt.
  2. Pour the cornstarch mixture over the shrimp and mix well.
  3. Place the shrimp and cornstarch mixture in the refrigerator for ½ hour.
  4. Place the vegetable oil in a wok, or large frying pan, and heat to medium high.
  5. Add the shrimp, in batches, to the wok and cook until golden brown.
  6. Remove the shrimp from the wok and drain on a paper towel lined plate.
  7. Remove most of the oil from the wok, until only around 2 tablespoons remain. Be careful performing this step, the oil will be extremely hot. Use a metal mixing spoon and remove the hot oil to a heat proof container, such as a Pyrex glass bowl.
  8. Add the onions, sugar and curry powder blend and cook for 2-3 minutes.
  9. Stir in the milk, BBQ sauce and bell pepper.
  10. Cook, while stirring, for another 2-3 minutes.
  11. Remove the wok from heat.
  12. Serve immediately.

Curry Powder Blend

In addition to flavoring the BBQ shrimp, this curry blend can also be used on chicken, fish, ribs, pork or even vegetables. This blend can be made ahead of time, and stored in a glass container until ready to use. Make large batches of this blend, and portion it out into decorative containers, to give away as gifts to friends and family members.

Ingredients for the Curry Powder Blend

  • 1 teaspoon chili powder
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon paprika
  • 1 teaspoon cumin
  • 1 teaspoon coriander
  • 1 teaspoon turmeric

Directions for the Curry Powder Blend

  1. Stir all the ingredients together in a small bowl.
  2. Store in an airtight container until ready to use.
